Notable Photographer // Kenneth Josephson

Last evening I was lucky enough to attend a lecture given by photography extraordinaire Kenneth Josephson. After growing up in Detroit, Josephson received his undergraduate education in photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology where studied under Minor White. He later received his masters degree from Illinois Institute of Technology.

While watching the slide show of his photography, we had the opportunity to hear him speak about the context of his work and were kindly encouraged us to ask questions of any sort. Shown above were a handful of my favorites from the show, and some of his most well known pieces.

Lyell // Past Looks

A close friend of mine - Therese Burke - owns an etsy shop where she sells handmade scarves. A small lookbook of Therese's product has been in the talks, and I'm very excited to photograph it as a personal project. In the mean time, I will be creating a sketch/scrapbook of the aesthetic I aim to recreate for the prospective project.

Once I began to look further into Lyell, I found that they either changed the name of their label or that Lyell may have been a branch of the brand, Tocca.

Photo Series Inspiration

I'm working on a new photography series that aims to connote sadness, despair and abandonment in objects, living and otherwise, whose sole purpose for existence is [assumed] to bring us happiness, pleasure and solace. I've been collecting found images for inspiration so that I can provide my model with a more comprehensive idea as to what my intended aesthetic is. By no means do I plan to replicate any of these images or poses. 

[Edited, Nov. 30] My purpose is to examine the surfaces, textures, patterns, lighting, interior space, emotions, textiles, and so fourth. While exploring the perception of what we see in juxtaposition to the reality of what lies beneath the surface value, I will allude to the evocative contradictions that we have been conditioned to disregard and, more often than not, refer to as a cultural taboo.

Some artists who've provided inspiration for the series were Gusav Klimt, KT Smail, Steven Meisel, Bruno Dayan, Yann Weber, Miranda Clark, Laura Maskbresku, Sally Mann, Tatiana Leshkina, Audrey Kawasaki, Kelly Robyn, Ella Wood and many, many more.

Dusty Dresses, Dolls & Afternoon Girls

This past Saturday evening, I was lucky enough to briefly meet Miranda Clark while attending an event at Salt and Cedar in Detroit. Miranda is a photographer who holds a masters of fine arts in new media and currently teaches at the University level in Detroit, MI. In addition to her photography, she and Marcy Chevali make up the collective they refer to as, afternoon girls.

As a photography student myself, I'm alway interested in learning about new photographers and their unique approach to capturing perceptions of their own realities. The above were a handful of my favorites.

What does autumn mean for you? 

For me, it's a time to lace up a pair of oxfords, tuck in a sweater covered flannel, bury yourself in a book, scrub out pink stained fingers from peeling pomegranates and relish in the freshness of the new season. 

Find solace in the warmth of your wool socked feet, sugar a steaming cup of dark roast coffee, rummage through dad's music collection for anything by Billie Holiday and early Saturday mornings spent at the farmers market—sifting through crowds of foodies—in search of deep green leafy kale, cloves of fresh garlic, and a handful of carrots for the new found recipe of curried carrot soup. 

A time to reflect on summers end and surrender to the new bursts of muted colors that envelope you.

Jen Causey is the food stylist and photographer behind the well known blog, simplybreakfast. Her ability to style with such eclectic precision amazes me, and she has a knack for making breakfast look simple, quaint and tasty without being overly contrived—the way it should be.
